Musical performances have been a regular feature of Prospect Park summers since the park’s opening in 1867. Every spring, park workers made wooden bandstands by hand on Music Island and other locations. Deciding to provide a more permanent structure, the Brooklyn Park Commission planned a bandstand with a ceiling specifically constructed to act as a sounding board, to project music toward the Nethermead. The trees nearby were shaped into a grove to provide shade for the audience.

Spring has arrived in Prospect Park, and Brooklyn’s Backyard is flourishing with vibrant hues throughout its 585 acres. In March you may have spotted the park's natural areas slowly waking up from winter with non-native but beautiful early blooms like Crocus (Crocus species), Daffodil (Narcissus species) and Snow drop (Galanthus nivalis).
